COLD BREW EN CASA

COLD BREW AT HOME

It may sound illogical and impossible to prepare coffee with cold water; However, this has been done for centuries but it was not until the last decade that it became popular in the United States and has become a new way to enjoy coffee and it is very easy to do it at home.

They only need a glass container and a strainer to filter it later. These are some of the key points to make a good preparation:

1. Concentrated or ready to drink?

If you want to have a concentrated cod brew that can be mixed with other ingredients then a low proportion is needed, for example 1g of coffee per 7g of water. Time also has an influence and can range from 12 hours to 24 hours. There are no written rules and it is a process of experimentation.

If you prefer a ready-to-drink cold brew then a ratio of 1g of coffee to 10-12g of water is fine.

2. Grinding

The grind should be medium to coarse because the preparation time is long.

3. Time

This decision is very personal but at least 8 hours are recommended to start. You can do a test and leave it longer if necessary.

4. Water

The requirement is that the water is at least room temperature but some prefer to do it with cold water and let the process develop in the refrigerator, but this causes the coffee flavors to be extracted more slowly.

Once we have reached the desired time it is time to filter it. It can be made with fabric such as a squeegee, paper or even a French press. The decision of how to filter it directly impacts the body of the drink, the fabric is a midpoint between paper that removes many oils and the French press that includes many sediments.

The final question is why prepare it like this? The final result is very different from preparing it with hot water since the sweetness is highlighted, a silky drink is obtained and the acidity, bitterness and astringency are reduced.

If you are going to do the experiment, remember to order your ground coffee to prepare cold brew and send us your photos and comments to see how it turned out for you.
